Building Permit  Application and Inspection Procedure 

All new construction, remodels, additions, alterations, removal, conversion, repairs, removal and demolition require a building permit. Decks, fences, signs and detached sheds also are required to be permitted. Plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work require trade permits. 

Applications for building permits must be complete including the following: 

  • Complete contact information
  • Scaled set of building plans
  • Description of work to be completed
  • 2012 IECC energy compliance information
  • Trade permits:
    • Plumbing
    • Mechanical
    • Electrical
  • Site plans including:
    • Property lines
    • Existing structures
    • Existing structures with measurements to property lines and other structures
    • Location of proposed new structures or project

All work must conform to applicable city codes and or ordinances of The City of Polk City 
Work must not commence until a valid building permit has been approved and issued with all associated fees paid. 
A permit will be issued once all requirements have been satisfied. Permits will be valid for one year and work must commence withing 180 days of being issued to remain valid.

Any work completed beyond the indicated point may be required to be removed by the Building Official. Portions that do not comply or require correction must remain uncovered until they have been approved by the Building Official. 

Inspection Notice

  • One business day notice required. 
  • Same day inspections may be attempted if possible but will not be common practice and not guaranteed.  
  • Permit holder is responsible for scheduling of all necessary inspections.
    Permit holders are also responsible to notify of any cancelation or rescheduling necessary of existing scheduled inspections.
  • Re-inspection fees may be assessed if the project is not ready at the time of inspection requiring another site visit.
