Citywide Sidewalk Repair Program

Sidewalk Repair Program

The City of Polk City is launching a citywide Sidewalk Repair Program to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility throughout the community. Following a comprehensive sidewalk inventory completed in 2025, the City identified more than 300 sidewalk repair locations and is addressing them through a phased, district-by-district approach beginning in 2026. Polk City's Sidewalk Repair Program follows a common practice used by many metro communities, including Des Moines, West Des Moines, Clive, Johnston, and Urbandale, to proactively identify sidewalk hazards and maintain safe, accessible pedestrian routes throughout the community.

Property owners have options for completing required repairs, including participating in the City's contractor program—which provides potential cost savings and waives the sidewalk permit fee—or hiring a contractor of their choice.

Residents are encouraged to learn more about the program, review repair timelines, and explore available options by visiting the Sidewalk Repair Program Overview page: https://www.polkcityia.gov/public-works/pages/sidewalk-repair-program-overview

Working together, we can help maintain safe, accessible sidewalks for residents and visitors throughout Polk City!
